SYRINGA HANDICAP (Listed) - TOUCH THE SKY flies from the clouds to get up on the line
There was an exciting finish to the listed Syring Handicap on the inside track at Turffontein this afternoon. His recent form has been beset by the odd tale of woe. He had not won for well over a year. The drop in class and distance could have done the trick.
The start was an even one with only CASHA once again slow away. ESTIDRAAJ was the first to show at the start but was settled back to allow NOT SULKING and NEGEV to set the pace. Once the field had settled down NEGEV led from ESTIDRAAJ, SEVENTH HEART and NOT SULKING.
The order remained the same through the 1000m pole with FORTITUDE and SE AGABOR also moving into contention. The race took on a different complexion with 600m to go. MAAYAAT came with a storming run and looked as though she may win. NEGEV began to fall away. At the 200m marker it looked as though MAAYAAT was going to be the likely winner but a storming final 100m from TOUCH THE SKY gave the judges and backers of both horses a few anxious moments.
The win gave TOUCH THE SKY her third win from seventeen starts and earnings to over R450 000.
