DAILY NEWS 2000 (Grade 1) - SIREN'S CALL aims to be best three year old in the country

SIREN'S CALL will be put to the test this afternoon when she takes on some good three year old males. Sadly for the racing enthusiasts she will not be seen doing battle with MAJMU. Were both to win their respective races this afternoon, any future meetings of these two will attract the crowds to the race track, irrespective of where the race were to be run. Her form has been excellent and she was just pipped on the line last time when pipped on the line by PINE PRINCESS. She could be excused that day as it was the first time that she had travelled that far. The 2000m should suit more, especially with the short straight at Greyville. Not in her favour could be the wide draw of fourteen in a sixteen horse field. His jockey for the race, Piere Strydom, will no doubt have planned how he will ride this filly from the Sean Tarry yard. Good horses with good jockeys can win from anywhere on the track! He has ridden her to all five of her wins with two seconds from seven starts. As has become customary, Sean Tarry rarely leaves the track on a feature race day without at least one winner.

UNPARALLELED has threatened to win a Grade 1. The way in which he won the Grade 2 Dingaans must give him a chance. He started that day at 50/1. He does have an excellent turn of speed but doesn't always produce his best work late. On his day he must have a good shout.

ERTIJAAL has been disappointing in his last two. For those looking to back him, it must be said that he did have excuses in both when the going was not firm. It is likely to be back to firm going again today. He had to be steadied last time and was a bit unbalanced as he left the stalls and was slow away. The time before that he was bumped at the start. If he can overcome the problems with his start then he should have a good shout in this race. Anthony Delpech rides for Mike De Kock. Having said that, he did win his first four starts including the Grade 1 Derby at Kenilworth three runs back.

DEPUTY JUD is never far back. He went down to ERTIJAAL by less than a length when they met in January. DEPUTY JUD is 2kg worse off and should finish behind ERTIJAAL again.

THE CONGLOMERATE won the Guineas at this track four weeks ago. He won that race with authority when beating MAC DE LAGO by two lengths. The win give the Cape trainers a chance of repeating their success in this race last year with LEGISLATE.

1st - SIREN'S CALL (16); 2nd - UNPARALLELED (7); 3rd - ERTIJAAL (5); 4th - DEPUTY JUD (4); 5th - THE CONGLOMERATE (3)
