The Gavin Van Zyl runner, HEART OF A LION, has never had stamina doubts and that was brought to the fore again this afternoon. The start was a good one, apart from ROC 'N ROSE who did not jump well and was never able to make up the deficit. The initial pace as they passed the winning post for the first time, was a sedate one.

JAY POWER was allowed to dictate the pace for most of the marathon 3000m. WILD ASH raced in second place for most of the race. KOLKATA and SMART MART. This order remained pretty much the same for the most part. until CRIME VICTIM decided to move around runners to run in the leading vanguard which was still being headed by JAY POWER. The two market rivals, HEART OF A LION and SOLID SPEED raced closest to the rear and the front. That changed as they hit the home straight.

Once JAY POWER failed to stay on it was left to WILD ASH and CRIME VICTIM to lead them home. Down the outside both HEART OF A LION and SOLID SPEED made a bold but and these two looked set to fight it out but while they were gearing up for the fight WILD ASH failed to give in and finished between the two market rivals. HEART OF A LION has won just under R750 000 in stake money from five wins in his twenty four runs. WILD ASH stayed on well for second while SOLID SPEED showed that he could just about see out the 3200m of the Gold Cup.
