CHAMPAGNE STAKES (WFA)(Grade 3) - LANNER FALCON shows her class
The four year old daughter of TRIPPI, LANNER FALCON, showed her class when she won the Grade 3 Champagne Stakes down the straight over 1200m at Kenilworth this afternoon. The Mike Bass trained filly was slow away but finished full of running.
Apart from LANNER FALCON, the field broke well. The WHICH DOCTOR and HOT AFFAIR were quickest to respond from SURFER GIRL. The pace was a decent one throughout. At the halfway point of the race LANNER FALCON was closest to last than first. Jockey Grant Van Niekerk, who always gets the best out of this filly, moved her into a challenging position with about 500m left to run. At the 400m mark it was clear that the winner was going to take a power of beating and by the 200m mark it was race over as she swept clear and went on to win going away.
All of PURE POWER, JET SUPREME and PRICELESS JEWEL ran on to fight out the minor placings. A runner to watch in future races is NTOMBE, who was finishing well from near last.
The win, her seventh from twenty five starts, has taken her winnings to just short of the R1 million.
