THEKWINI STAKES (Grade 1) - CHESTNUTS N PEARLS could win second Grade 1 in four starts

Because the race was moved from last week to today, the two year old race for fillies is effectively a race for three year olds, be it by only a day. That should not have any bearing on the outcome of this race. There are some highly talented two year old fillies participating in this race. CHESTNUTS N PEARLS won the Grade 1 Golden Slipper at this track on July Day. She received good support that day and did not disappoint her backers and won impressively by 1,5 lengths despite starting at wide odds of 16/1. She will see out the extra 200m from last time. Trainer Dennis Drier, who had an excellent July Day, could continue with his Grade 1 success, with the daughter of HORSE CHESTNUT. Sean Cormack who has ridden her in all three runs thus far, will be in the saddle once more. Watch for yet another good late finish this afternoon. She has won just over R420 000 in three starts.

OLD EM ran a very good post maiden against weaker last time but she could be the big improver in this lineup. All three of her runs have been at Turffontein. The daughter of TRIPPI will prefer this trip and on what we have seen in her last two runs suggests that she will a few races this coming season. She has yet to be tested at this level but could be worth a small investment in the places. Craig Zackey rides for champion trainer for the season, Sean Tarry.

PERSIAN RUG is unbeaten after two starts. She won very well last time despite casting a shoe. She looks to have scope and impressed in both starts. She won well at this track when she made her debut in April. She has started both races rather slowly but finished far more rapidly. This will be her first run in this type of field but is still improving. S'Mango Khumalo rides for Mike De Kock. He rode her to victory last time.

FLYING ICE is also unbeaten after two starts. She won a small feature at this track last time. Even though she too has shown ability in both starts, she takes on far stronger today. Expect another honest run and she looks to have the ability to earn something.

MELLIFLORA finished almost four lengths behind CHESTNUTS N PEARLS last time. At level weights it appears unlikely that she will be able to change the order. She has won since then and that was an impressive win. She has ability and three runs back won this C & D. The Mike Azzie yard has had a fantastic KZN Winter Season. One to keep an eye on.
