THEKWINI STAKES (Grade 1) - LAUDERDALE wins first feature on Gold Cup Day
The two year old daughter of ELUSIVE FORT, LAUDERDALE produced a good finish to win the biggest race of her career in the first Grade 1 on the day's Greyville card. She has certainly been improving since changing yards early on in her career. She ran a very good race last time behind the well fancied CHESTNUTS N PEARLS in the Grade 1 Golden Slipper four weeks ago. She did well to overturn that difference in lengths at level weights.
The field moved into the starting stalls easily and as a result the start to the race was a good one. The favourite CHESTNUTS N PEARLS broke well but was held up as PERSIAN RUG went to take the lead. This race was a huge jump in class for the Mike De Kock runner but was an unlucky loser as she lost her strike at the 200m mark when she momentarily dug her hills into the turf. This allowed LAUDERDALE to take the race by the "scruff of the neck" and she went on to win well.
MELLIFLORA ran on down the inside and took second from a rapidly recovering PERSIAN RUG, who, it must be said, ran a great race in rallying back so well.
The winner, LAUDERDALE has now won two races from eight starts. The Duncan Howells yard has done extremely well with this filly and they have had a successful Winter Season. In total she has amassed just under R500 000 in stakes money.
CHESTNUTS N PEARLS ought not to be written off. She is too good and she will be one to watch during the Cape Town Summer Season, along with PERSIAN RUG who will no doubt be targeted for the Highveld Summer Season.
