The horses broke in a clean line with CAPTAIN AMERICA breaking best of all. He was followed by HELDERBERG BLUE, SAIL FOR GOLD and FUTURA. The pace was a good one throughout. The five year old son of CAPTAIN AL confirmed his class. His last win came at the end of March when he won the Grade 1 Horse Chestnut at Turffontein over the same distance by an impressive four lengths. He was given a prep run by his trainer Brett Crawford three weeks ago at Durbanville.
Birthday Boy jockey, Corne Orffer, took CAPTAIN AMERICA to the front from the start and never let go the advantage. In fact the order remained almost the same until the last 400m when FUTURA, PATERFAMILIAS and especially ACT OF WAR, who had to make up up a dozen lengths at the 600m mark. CAPTAIN AMERICA showed great heart when holding on under the threat of the faster finishing horses around him.
FUTURA was in need of the run and he will be at his best for the next feature race he contests. CAPTAIN AMERICA has now won seven races from seventeen starts and has amassed just under R2 700 000 in stakes money.
