Million dollar Snitzel colt lights up Magic Millions ring

Agent Dean Hawthorne said he was not leaving the Gold Coast without a colt by Snitzel which became the first seven-figure transaction at the Magic Millions yearling sale on Thursday.

The colt Hawthorne prized above all others is a brother to Group I winner Sweet Idea and half-brother to Singapore Listed winner Rush.

The Arrowfield-consigned chestnut is out of the Group III-performer Flidais with the Group I The Metropolitan Handicap winner Electronic as his granddam.

Bidding commenced at $500,000 and after a swift exchange it was Hawthorne signing the tab at $1.1 million.

"He just had everything, he was the best colt in the sale as far as I was concerned,” Hawthorne said.

Despite the million dollar price tag, Hawthorne said he was determined to secure the colt and would have gone higher.

"He’s the top Snitzel here and he ticked all the boxes, just a cracker,” Hawthorne said.

"He was the one we wanted and we had a bit more left if we needed it,

"He’s a beautifully balanced colt and by a proven stallion. I’m pretty stoked to get him.”

Hawthorne confirmed the colt would be trained by Hawkes Racing.

"He’s been bought for a syndicate, it’s still open but there’s not much left in him,” Hawthorne said.
