China Horse Club investing in South African horses

China Horse Club is making any impact on world racing with its purchasing power in the sales rings and the racetracks. The Shanghai based club is now investing in South African horse racing. At the recent Cape Thoroughbred Sales,  they bought two fillies, one a Var for R1. 9 million from Avontuur Estate and a Dynasty for R800 000 from Highlands Farm.

CHC was only formed four years ago but already has raced the winners of 130 races worldwide — including 10 at Group 1 level. They include Aidan O’Brien’s superstar Australia which won the 2014 English and Irish derbies and the Juddmonte International.

“The China Horse Club is a lifestyle, business and thoroughbred racing club that works to provide unique experiences to its members,’’ Eden Harrington,  CHC vice president said.

“The founder and chairman is Teo Ah Khing. The club has been his vision and he is very much the driving force behind its success. We have an experienced management team centred in Shanghai, our headquarters, and Singapore, our international office.

“Importantly, the China Horse Club is also supported by an International Advisory Council which is made up of leaders of industry from a range of fields as diverse as international business, philanthropy, politics and thoroughbred racing.’’

Harrington said China Horse Club has expanded its presence and has runners being trained in England and the United States this year while it has just begun investing in South African horse racing.

“We have breeding bases in Australia, Ireland and the United States,’’ he said. “Our involvement in Australia is very significant. Right now Australia is our biggest investment outside of China and we would have an interest in almost 150 racehorses, stallions, mares, yearlings and foals, and we have a beautiful estate in the Southern Highlands as well.’’
