S A DERBY (Grade 1) - ABASHIRI has to work hard for Triple Crown
History was made at Turffontein this afternoon when the three year old ABASHIRI won the Triple Crown, despite having to work hard for his win over 2450m. Trainer Mike Azzie has had top class horses including NATIONAL CURRENCY who flew the South African flag overseas, but the win with ABASHIRI, would have surpassed that. He was confidently ridden by Karl Zechner, who at no stage, pressed the emergency button. He was second to last to load in a field that loaded without any fuss. ABASHIRI became the third horse in South African turf history to win the Triple Crown. HORSE CHESTNUT (Mike De kock) and LOUIS THE KING (Geoff Woodruff) were before that. He really proved his class this afternoon.
The start was a good one except for BANKABLE TEDDY who lost a few lengths. The favourite found himself three from last for most of the way along the back straight. Around the turn there was onl;y one horse behind him. Stable companion SCHEME OF THINGS set a good pace for most of the race. PREMIER CHANCE tracked him for a large portion of the contest with MILLA'S WORLD and TRIP TO PARADISE changing places for third and fourth.
At the top of the hiome straight ABASHIRI found himself one from last but moved to the outside where jockey Karl Zechner got to work hard on him. The runner up, ROCKETBALL, pushed him all the way and the upset looked a possibility. The supporters were relieved when he produced that little bit extra to win by a long head. SAMURAI BLADE stayed on for third with STEBBINS, in vastly improved run, fourth.
In the post race interview trainer Mike Azzie said that the Vodacom Durban July would be his next target. He has raced at Greyville and he won his maiden on debut at the course.
