PREVIEW: SCOTTSVILLE - 1 MAY 2016
RACE 1:
14-1-3-13-4
GOLDEN FORT ran his best race in four last time. Can improve further. Top jockey aboard. REBEL CIRCUS has had two decent runs to date. Watch for improvement. ROY’S ROLL’S ROYCE has the form to throw out a challenge and it would not come as a surprise were he to win. COURAGEOUS KING can earn something. Has some ability. KAYKAYNOKNIDS is an A P ANSWER first timer. PATROCLUS had weak Cape Town form. May improve with gelding.
RACE 2:
1-4-3-2-9
CATHERINEOFARAGON is from a yard that is in good form. Top jockey aboard. Only place was over the distance and is improving. FASHION FUSION is getting closer with each run. Blinkers off! The blinkers go on DUBLINER who may improve with the headgear. FEATURE BID has been losing ground at the start but could earn again with an apprentice claiming 4 kg. MPHUMI did not show on debut last time. Could surprise an place.
RACE 3:
6-10-2-5-8
ROY’S GUARDIAN is unbeaten this C & D (2 from 2). Those are her only two. She will be running on and the yard is in good form. The apprentice claim from a promising young apprentice is 4 kg. GRAND FANTASY has shown great improvement in her last two. Should challenge. SHE’S A FORTRESS has been running well and is in good form. Should be right there. MIDANSWER weakened latter stages last time over the same distance. MOONLITE MIST needs are more sustained and consistent finish.
RACE 4:
11-3-1-5-4
A competitive field. Sean Tarry sends out CAPTAIN'S CAUSEWAY, a winner of three from four starts. This will be his third run after a lengthy break. Should go well and will be looking for the hat trick. Top jockey aboard. Dean Kannemeyer saddles CAPTAIN ALFREDO who has excellent form against similar. He has run well over the distance and should be a leading contender. Top jockey aboard. GULF STORM has not run for three months since he won the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m. He has won over further. Will have a very good chance if not needing the run. CAPTAIN SWAROVSKI from the Justin Snaith yard won his last two in Cape Town. Stable jockey, Richard Fourie, has the ride. Takes on stronger. Another horse taking on stronger is ERNIE from the Mike Bass yard. Cannot leave this one out. He is well fancied ante post.
RACE 5: STRELITZIA STAKES (Grade 3) - THE SECRET IS OUT
5-1-2-7-6
The previous feature race was dominated largely by the KZN trainers. This one appears to have bypassed the local trainers for top honours in the race. THE SECRET IS OUT makes his KZN debut. He won on debut at Kenilworth last time when he won with authority by almost four lengths. He does look the sort that could be followed with some conviction during the Winter Season. Vaughan Marshall, who skipped last year's season, has made up for that by bringing a strong string to KZN this time around. She was sent out at 4/10 on debut which says that she is well above average. Stable jockey, MJ Byleveld has the ride again.
Mike De Kock, whose KZN's string has been quiet in recent weeks, sends out the unbeaten AL HAWRAA. Both runs have been over the track but over 100 metres shorter. Young and up and coming jockey, Callan Murray, has the ride for the first time. She has really finished well in both starts and should be one of the early fancies to win this feature.
Trainer Mike Bass also has an unbeaten two year old filly line up in this race. WAKE UP MAGGIE will probably not need a wake up call as she has looked alert in both starts at Kenilworth. She has raced handy in both starts and has that late kick to pull away in the latter stages. She will be an interesting runner during the season. Anton Marcus rides.
VISUALITY lost a length on debut last time but still won with authority. This Sean Tarry runner should also give a good account of herself. S'Manga Khumalo has chosen to ride her instead of stable companion, TOUCHING, who won well on debut last time. She will be ridden by Cape Town jockey, Grant Van Niekerk.
RACE 6: GODOLPHIN BARB STAKES (Grade 3) - Follow the RED CHESTNUT ROAD
5-1-2-6-9
This meeting has a feeling of anti-climax as we move from four grade one races at Turffontein on the last day of April to the the Grade three races at Scottsville on the first day in May. This is a race for juvenile colts who have only had a run or two and form is limited. In and amongst the fields, there will be some pointers to later in in the season when a few of these juveniles will be contesting the more lucrative features during the Winter Season, along with those that shone on Champions Day at Turffontein yesterday.
RED CHESNUT ROAD was well backed in on his debut last time and literally cruised in by almost eight lengths. This race will tell us whether he is as good as that run was. He showed great pace and pulled away in the latter stages. That run was at this track but over 100m further.
The only two-time winner in the race is ROB'S JEWEL who has won two from three races. He won both his starts at Scottsville and ran in a feature at Turffontein in which he ran a close up fourth. This son of ARGONAUT will be running on.
GUNNER won on debut last time and also looks difficult to assess. On that run he should earn something. SKIP THE RED ran moderately on debut three runs back but won his next race at this track against a weak field. Last time he showed huge improvement with that win under his belt even though he was once again beaten by ROB'S JEWEL. This time he cut the deficit by around six lengths. Sean Tarry sends out RED ROCK. Today he has sent S'Manga Khumalo to ride at Scottsville which is a clear indication that this meeting will be taken seriously.STRELITZIA STAKES (Grade 3) - THE SECRET IS OUT
RACE 7: POINSETTIA STAKES (Grade 3) - CUVEE BRUT has top class form
5-1-9-7-6
Brett Crawford has brought a top string from Cape Town for the Winter Season. His five year old filly CUVEE BRUT easily won the Prix du Cap at Kenilworth last time. But was did catch the eye was her short head second to CARRY ON ALICE at Kenilworth in December. We all know how well CARRY ON ALICE won yesterday at Turffontein when beating the males in the Computaform Sprint over 1000m. That was ever so impressive. That puts CUVEE BRUT in with a great chance this afternoon.
Cape Town trainer, Mike Bass, looks to have brought a top class string for the season and he could have a big say in most of the feature races on offer. He could be spot on with LANNER FALCON who was not disgraced behind stable companion, INARA, in Cape Town last time. Yesterday in the Premier's Champions Challenge, INARA did not show over a distance too far for her. Will be in the shake up. Grant Van Niekerk has partnered her to all eight of her wins. She will be doing her best work late.
Dean Kannemeyer is having an excellent time in KZN since setting up his satellite yard in September. He sends out REAL PRINCESS who had a good Cape Town Season. He returned to KZN and was sent out at 6/10 last time but ran below her cap[ability. She returns to a track where she has won three from five. Cannot ignore her chances, especially with Anthony Delpech aboard.
PRINCESS ROYAL, from the Glen Kotzen yard won her last two at Kenilworth. She is no stranger to Scottsville and ran well here last year. She will be running on. Local trainer, Duncan Howells, can challenge the visiting trainers with COSMIC LIGHT. She was unbeaten after three before she campaigned in Cape Town during the Summer Season there. She may not have won her two races but ran a very good race behind CARRY ON ALICE where she ran less than two lengths back. Can make an impact in this race. Do not ignore. She is out at the weights with PRINCESS ROYAL on their latest runs.
RACE 8:
7-5-2-3-1
SILVERTURNSTOGOLD has had two good runs and looks to have a very good chance this afternoon. MAMBO is improving. SILVERTURNSTOGOLD has been enjoying racing over distance. NIGHTBREEZE can earn something on best run to date. FASHION DANCER has improved in KZN in his last three starts.
RACE 9:
9-1-2-7-8
DIAMOND COAST ran two very good initial runs before winning her maiden at the third attempt. Could be followed again. TONYA has been holding form well. Ran well on her KZN debut last time. Had good form in Cape Town. JET INTOMBI has very good form at Greyville. First run at Scottsville. SILKEN won her maiden at the fourth attempt last time. Had good form before that. MAYBE showed huge improvement last time and is one to watch.
