WINTER DERBY (Grade 3) - ELUSIVE SILVA produces great finish to lead them home in the Winter Derby
The Justin Snaith trained ELUSIVE SILVA ran on powerfully in the final 300m to win the Winter Derby at Kenilworth this afternoon. The three year old son of SILVANO proved that he is a horse that enjoys running on from near the back of the field.
The start was an even one but it was clear right from the start that there was not going to be much pace in the race. ROMAN DISCENT was the early leader from EIGHTH WONDER with CAPTAIN SPLENDID and the favourite, WHISKY BARON in close contention.
EIGHTH WONDER took over the lead for the next 1700 metres. There was not much change to the leading division. With about 1200 metres left to go WHISKY BARON found himself three lengths of the front few and then six lengths back at the top of the home straight.
EIGHTH WONDER did look dead and buried at the 300 metre marker but did stay on for second and was game in defeat. The field never had any answer to the finish by ELUSIVE SILVA. He should be one to watch during the Cape Town Summer Season.
This was his third win from nine starts and has amassed just under R300 000 in stake money.
