First winner for Derby winner

Former Derby winner, Dan De Lago, got off their mark on Friday when his daughter Killala romped home to win by two and a half lengths over 1000m.

Bred by the Limestone Thoroughbred Trust the consistent Killala, has now won or placed in five of her six outings to date.

Her sire Dan De Lago has made a pleasing start to his stud career –with his small first crop of two-year-olds this season including five runners who have either won or finished in the money.

A son of champion sire Encosta De Lago Dan De Lago was a top class galloper. The regally bred colt won or placed in ten of just 15 outings, with his victories including a win (over a star studded field) in the G2 Gold Circle Derby and he also finished second to ill-fated Equus Champion and Vodacom Durban July winner Big City Life in the G1 Daily News 2000.

Dan De Lago accounted for subsequent G1 Singapore Cup winner/G1 Dubai World Cup runner up Lizard’s Desire when he won the Gold Circle Derby and he also vanquished that son of Lizard Island when runner up in the Daily News.

In all, Dan De Lago won five times, with his wins coming from 1400-2400m.

The stallion, who stands at The Alchemy in Robertson, is one of 110 stakes winners for former Australian champion sire Encosta De Lago, whose offspring include ill-fated top sire Northern Meteor and current sprint sensation Chautauqua, as well as former SA champion Delago Deluxe.
