Louis The King's victory in the 2014 Grade 1 South African Derby, saw him become only the second horse to claim Triple Crown glory in the modern era of South African horseracing, Abashiri who emulated the feat last season, is of course our most recent South African Triple Crown Champion, but we still need to hail the all conquering king, and honour him and his achievements as a racehorse.

Louis The King, is a champion, who came from the humblest of beginnings at the Alchemy Stud. He is by the successful Storm Cat (USA) stallion, Black Minnaloushe (USA) and he is out of the mare Pamushana by Rich Man's Gold (USA). He was highly thought of by The Alchemy’s owner Philip Kahan as a foal, but Kahan's high regard for the horse was not shared by the buyers at that Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, Louis went through the ring unsold and he could not understand this. A rather dejected man, he was about to leave the sale with his best colt and head home, but there was hope, he bumped into Trainer Geoff Woodruff, who had only gone to the sale to pick up some Vodacom Durban July tickets, a deal was brokered in the parking lot and Kahan sold Louis to Woodruff for R60 000. Woodruff then sold Louis onto Tiaan van de Vyfer, Tiaan then gave the colt to his son "Louis" as a gift, after whom the horse is named.
Louis The King won 6 of his 7 starts as a three year old, from 1400m - 2400m. He won the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes, claimed the illustrious Triple Crown and finished the season with a third in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000. At Four he won the Grade 1 Summer Cup and placed in the Grade 2 Charity Mile and Grade 1 Queens Plate. His racing career was curtailed due to injury and he was retired to stud, his new home is Terry and Annabel Andrews’ Sorrento Stud in Agter-Paarl, Western Cape. Louis stands 16.1 hands high and was extremely versatile, tough and consistent as a racehorse plus he had a lovely, laid back nature to boot.
