TANAZA BOUNCES BACK TO FORM

TANAZA (IRE) returned to the form of her two-year-old career when running out a comfortable winner of the Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary on Thursday. The Dermot Weld trained filly won on debut and followed up with a defeat of Alice Springs (IRE) in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes, before finishing four lengths fourth to Minding (IRE) in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Unplaced on her three starts this season, she dropped down to seven and a half furlongs on her latest start, ridden close to the pace by Pat Smullen, taking the lead with a furlong to go and stayed on well to beat Listed winner Creggs Pipes (IRE) by three and a half lengths.

The Aga Khan homebred is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Taniyar (IRE), out of the Listed-winning Dalakhani (IRE) mare Tanoura (IRE), who is herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Takali (IRE), Grade 2 winner Takarian (IRE) and Group 3 winner Takar (IRE).

The other Stakes race on the card, the Listed Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes over five furlongs, saw the Robert Cowell-trained SPIRIT QUARTZ (IRE) make his second successful raid on Ireland. The winner of a Listed contest at Cork in June, he was this time ridden by Shane Foley, who chased his mount into the lead a furlong in, asserting inside the final furlong and running on to score by two and a quarter lengths. It was the eight-year-old's fourth Stakes win, having gained Group wins in both France and Italy, the latter having come in partnership with Italian trainer Devis Grilli.

Bred by Ballygallon Stud, SPIRIT QUARTZ (IRE) is one of 48 individual Group winners by Irish National Stud sire Invincible Spirit (IRE), who commanded a fee of €120,000 in 2016. He is the third foal out of the unraced Rainbow Quest mare Crystal Gaze (IRE), a half-sister to a Listed winner from the family of German champion two-year-old Winter Quarters and Group 2 winner Passing Glance.
