SA JOCKEY WINS VICTORIA DERBY

South African born Glyn Schofield made international headlines when he was victorious in Saturday's Gr1 AAMI Victoria Derby at Flemington on Prized Icon (More Than Ready).

Schofield gave Prized Icon a superb ride as the pair drew clear to post a stylish two and a half length win over favourite Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi) in the 2500m classic. It was an improved effort by the colt who had finished fifth, behind Sacred Elixir, last time out at Moonee Valley.

Prized Icon, who was winning for the third time in 13 outings, had previously tasted top level success when victorious in last season's G1 Champagne Stakes (when also ridden by Schofield).

Out of the stakes winning Danehill mare Tropical Affair, Prized Icon has now banked over AUS $1.4 million in stakes.

Schofield commented after the win in Saturday's AUS $1.5 million race, "I had a pretty trouble free race the whole way around. I just wanted to get on the back of the favourite and follow it. At the Valley last week, he just got lost and it wasn't really his track. I knew with the big open spaces today he would show his best."

A jockey who enjoyed plenty of success in his native South Africa, Schofield emigrated to Australia in 2008.

Since re-locating, Glyn has enjoyed plenty of success in Australia, where his other big race victories include the 2009 Gr1 George Main Stakes (on Road To Rock), the Gr1 Golden Rose (on Manawanui -a son of now SA based sire Oratorio), the 2012 Gr1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (on Hay List), and the 2015 Gr1 New Bloodstock Memsie Stakes.

The latter race was won aboard Boban (Bernardini) -a horse Schofield struck up a notable partnership with. That combination also won the 2014 Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes together as well as the 2013 Gr1 Emirates Stakes.
