CAPTAIN AL STORMS INTO THE LEAD

Following yet another great weekend, in which he was represented by four more winners, former champion sire Captain Al (Al Mufti) has stormed to the top of South Africa’s General Sires List.

The eight times champion sire of 2yos has been represented by six stakes winners already in 2016-2017, with highlights of the season including his sons Search Party and Captain Alfredo running 1-3 in the recent Gr2 World Sports Betting Cape Merchants and daughters Jo’s Bond and Carry On Alice filling the first two berths in Saturday’s Gr2 CTS Southern Cross Stakes.

(Jo’s Bond was the third Captain Al daughter to win the Southern Cross –following Dance With Al in 2009 and Carry On Alice last year).

At the time of writing, Captain Al runners have amassed over R6.1 million in stakes for the season, and he is currently clear of Silvano (Lomitas), Trippi (End Sweep) and Dynasty (Fort Wood) on the General Sires List.

His 75 stakes winners to date include 13 individual Gr1 winners, highlighted by the Equus Champions All Is Secret, Always In Charge, Captain Of All, and Cloth Of Cloud.

Captain Al’s champion son, Captain Of All, currently stands alongside his sire at Klawervlei.

Silvano, who is runner up on the sires list, is another stallion enjoying a good season in 2016-2017. Maine Chance Farms’ flagbearer has been represented by the graded winners Girl On The Run (Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap) and Nebula (Gr3 Betting World Algoa Cup), as well as Gr2 Green Point Stakes runner up and leading Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate/ Gr1 Sun Met hope Marinaresco.

Last season’s champion sire Trippi, whose current runners include top sprinter Trip To Heaven and Gr2 Selangor Cup (and Saturday’s Gr1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas hope) Gold Standard, has been represented by the earners of over R5.7 million this season thus far.
