The Derby Is On The Horizon

With the Grade 1 Cape Derby over 2000m all set to take place at Kenilworth racecourse, on Saturday January 21st, the majority of racing enthusiasts will be analyzing the prospects of recent Grade 3 Politician Stakes winner Horizon.

The colt who is trained by Candice Bass - Robinson was purchased by her father Mike Bass for R5.2 million rand at the 2015 CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale. It isn't very hard to see why he went for an astronomical amount of money, Horizon is sired by Dynasty who has fathered some of the most outstanding equine athletes of the modern era in South African racing inc Beach Beauty, Futura, Irish Flame and Legislate to name, but a few. His dam Shina is a full sister to former champion sire Silvano, all in all that makes him close to the best bred horse in this country. The colt was rather small at the time of the sale, but he soon grew into a strapping individual and on the 1st of November last year he broke his maiden at just the second time of asking.

Horizon has won twice and placed twice since then, and he has earned stakes of R241 025 in his five career starts to date, there should be plenty more to come from this regally bred animal, and whilst he is still in the early days of his career as a racehorse, it would not be surprising if breeders are already eyeing him as a possible stallion prospect!
