CHAMPION SIRE’S REMARKABLE MET DAY REPRESENTATION

Klawervlei Stud’s ever green sire Captain Al (Al Mufti), South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2014-2015, is remarkably well represented on next Saturday’s Sun Met day at Kenilworth.

Captain Al, who has headed South Africa’s 2YO Sire List for the past eight seasons running, has no fewer than 26 runners carded for the day, and will be represented in all but one of the 13 races carded.

The former Cape Guineas winner is particularly strong in the day’s nine features –with no fewer than 21 Captain Al sired runners set to contest next Saturday’s rich feature line up.

“The Captain’s” Met day extravaganza starts in the first race, when his son Captain Swarovski will contest the South African Hall Of Fame presented by Samsung MR96 Handicap. Captain Al has no fewer than four runners in the following race –the day’s first feature –which is the Listed The Princess Charlene Of Monaco Summer Juvenile Stakes sponsored by Cell C. Here, Captain Al’s quartet includes debut winner Princess Peach, Call To Account (who ran third to Princess Peach on her only racetrack appearance) and the unraced two-year-olds Captain’s Charm and Kasimir.

Captain Al has a single runner, Captain My Captain, in the R1 000 000 Kuda Sprint, but has a powerful contingent of six entries in the following race, the CTS Sprint. His runners in this feature include the talented Sergeant Hardy (a winner of five of his seven outings thus far), former Equus Champions Always In Charge and Cloth Of Cloud, and Myfunnyvalentine, Red Light Girl and Al Danza.

Captain Al’s Gr1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas winner William Longsword could have his swansong when lining up in the CTS Mile. His sire has no fewer than four runners in the Gr1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship –Captain Alfredo, Search Party, Jo’s Bond and triple G1 winner Carry On Alice.

Captain’s Flame and Moonlight ‘N Roses represent Captain Al in the Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, while another daughter, Captain Gambler, does the same in the next race, the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby.

Former Gr1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Captain America is Captain Al’s only runner in the day’s main feature, the Gr1 Sun Met Celebrated with Mumm, run for a purse of R5 000 000. Captain Al is also sire of Gr2 The Blue Label Telecoms Cape Stayers hope Captain Splendid (like Captain America and Captain’s Flame, out of a Fort Wood mare).

Former Gr3 Magnum Cape Classic winning Eighth Wonder and recent winner Union Jack represent Captain Al in the 11th race, while the 12th race is the only event on the card where Captain Al is not carded to have at least one runner.

Captain Al’s final runners on Sun Met day comes in the 13th and final race, The Tab 1400 FM 82 handicap, where daughters Twinkle Toes and Lovely Rita are runners.
