SA Horseracing recently took time to chat to Nkosi Hlophe –the chief photographer for Gold Circle. Nkosi spoke about his involvement in racing, and touched on his hopes for the future.

Do you come from a racing background?
No.

How did you get involved with racing?
By applying for the position.

When did you first get involved with photography?
I started photography when I was at high school.


How long have you worked with Gold Circle –and what is your official position?
I started working in 2005 part time then 2006 permanent, I'm a Chief Photographer.

What are your responsibilities as photographer?
Taking pictures and upload them on Gold Circle website with captions.


Have you done any professional photography work outside racing?
Yes, I worked for the Independent newspaper as a sport photographer.


Do you own any horses- would you like to, if not?
No, I don't own any horse, but I love too, one day.

Do you have a favourite course?
I love Scottsville, as it always gives me good pictures, with no shade. 


What is your favourite raceday?
I enjoy Saturday's day meetings mostly.


Are you a punter? 
I'm not a punter, but I can predict the winning horse. (haha) 

What are the biggest challenges of your daily work?
It is not to miss the finish, and to always focus on the winner.

What inspires you about racing?
Racing is international, and I have got to know people from different nations.

Has anyone in particular been a mentor/inspiration to you in racing?
Yes, Gill Mostert, she taught me a lot about racing, she took care of me when I joined the company.

What personal goals/ambitions do you have in racing?
I received my long service award last year 2016 and I managed to build my Mom a house. I am also  getting married soon.

What advice would you give an inspiring young photographer keen to get involved in racing?

Love your job, do your best in your job, respect people you working with, and always give thanks for what you have.

What, if anything, would you like to see changed in racing?

If racing was stopped on Sundays, family day, people go to church.
