Champion Winx Soars in Apollo

Champion galloper Winx showed she was in to give Sydney racegoers an autumn to remember with an awesome first up win in today's Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
In emulating the horse regarded as Australia's best ever in Phar Lap, with 14 consecutive wins at group level, Winx cruised to the line to beat crack galloper Hartnell by two and three quarter lengths.

At her first run since her record breaking eight length win in the Cox Plate in October, Winx couldn't have been any more impressive - racing clear of a class field in a few strides to win easily.

The highest ranked turf horse in the world will continue on now to three Group One races - the Chipping Norton and George Ryder Stakes' before her Grand Final of this preparation, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Connections aren't getting too far ahead with future plans - but a tilt at a third consecutive win in the Cox Plate is also well and truly on the cards in the spring.

"A very humbling experience to say the least," a proud Chris Waller said. "It's a huge privilege to be a part of her career."

"Hugh does such a fantastic job. He's Mr Cool and he makes it look easy. It's not that easy. There's a field of 14 horses - he has to get her out at the right time and unleash."

"It's just a pleasure to be a part of it," Waller added.

It continues to be the ride of a lifetime for her owners.

"To have some many people behind her is humbling," part owner Debbie Kepitis said. "The crowd is brilliant and it was also brilliant she was able to do again what she does."

"You can't describe how it feels to have the whole of Australia and a lot of other places behind this wonderful horse. She is wonderful."

For winning rider Hugh Bowman the fairytale story of Winx continues and he is very proud of the achievements of his best four legged friend.

"Within the blink of an eye it was all over," Bowman said. "We've come to have a very healthy respect of her as does everyone who watches her."

"It's great to be a part of it. She's great for our industry."

"She's a racehorse. She's an athlete. She's an exciting piece of work and it's a privilege to be a part of it."

A $230,000 purchase for Magic Bloodstock from the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Winx has now earned her connections prizemoney of $9,491,925.

Winx, a daughter of former outstanding international sire Street Cry, was bred by the Camilleri family of Fairway Thoroughbreds and is from their stakes winning Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl.

Meanwhile, the girls were cheering loud earlier in the afternoon when outstanding filly Global Glamour held on for a thrilling win in the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).

Having her first start since a gallant second in the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Global Glamour showed blistering speed throughout for a brilliant win.

A daughter of fellow former Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase Star Witness, Global Glamour was bred by the O'Brien family of Corinella in Victoria and sold through their Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm draft for $65,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Raced by a syndicate of ladies from around the world, Global Glamour has now earned her jubilant connections some $1,133,500.

Zestful made it a memorable afternoon for the Magic Millions fillies and mares when she scored a valuable win in the Group Three Triscay Stakes.

A $90,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale bred to Northern Hemisphere time, Zestful broke through for her first win at group level with a strong win.

Prepared by Kris Lees, Zestful is a daughter of Redoute's Choice who was offered on the Gold Coast by Bellerive Stud and purchased by part owner Paul Frampton. Paul races the filly in partnership with Widden Stud.

Back in the field for much of the race, Zestful came with a brilliant finishing burst back to the inside of the main challengers to win impressively.

Zestful is a well bred mare. She is a half sister to the stakes performer and producer Zedazest (dam of Zest a Second) as well as the dam of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose.
