SINGER UPSETS SYCAMORE SPRINT

The Corne Spies trained Seattle Singer (Sail From Seattle) caused a 28-1 upset when she won Saturday’s Gr3 Sycamore Sprint at Turffontein.

With last year’s winner Tiger’s Touch (Where’s That Tiger) a late scratching from the 1160m race, the 2017 Sycamore had a wide open look to it, with former Gr2 Camellia Stakes winner and top weight Joan Ranger (Horse Chestnut) jumping the 33-10 tote favourite.

Fancied runners Old Em (Trippi) and Crystal Glamour (Seventh Rock) were in touch early, with eventual winner Seattle Singer just off the pace.

With 300m left to run, Seattle Singer loomed up menacingly, to challenge Crystal Glamour, who was looking to provide trainer Gary Alexander with a second graded win on the card.

Seattle Singer, runner up to champion Always In Charge (Captain Al) in last year’s Tsogo Sun Gr1 Gold Medallion, made a mockery of her outsider status and drew clear under Craig Zackey to register 1.4 length win –and picked up the first graded win of her career in the process.

Owned by Messrs van Huyssteen, McNab and Englezakis, Seattle Singer won Saturday’s R250 000 contest in a time of 65.65.

A full-sister to Gr1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship winner Gulf Storm, the Ascot Stud bred Seattle Singer took her tally to 3 wins from 16 outings.
