IRISH CONNECTIONS TO BIG NEWBURY WINNERS

Two of three Group 3 races at Newbury on Saturday went the way of Irish-bred horses with the other sired by an Irish-based sire. MUNTAHAA (IRE) led the spree by digging deep to land the Group 3 John Porter Stakes over 12 furlongs. He was bred by Shadwell Estate and carries the colours of Sheikh Hamdan.

DABYAH (IRE) won the prominent 1,000 Guineas trial, the Fred Darling Stakes, by making virtually all of the running although it appears the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches in May will be on her agenda.

Later on the superior stamina of BARNEY ROY won the Greenham Stakes. He is from the first crop of Coolmore’s Excelebration (IRE) and was bred by Hong Kong-owned, Australian-based operation Sun Stud. Trainer Richard Hannon said BARNEY ROY would be campaigned towards the 2,000 Guineas and possibly the Derby at Epsom also.
