WOLJAYRINE UPSETS GODOLPHIN BARB

Maiden Woljayrine (Jay Peg), making just his second racetrack appearance, caused something of an upset when beating some highly regarded opponents in Sunday’s Gr3 Godolphin Barb Stakes at Scottsville.

Trained by Vaughan Marshall for owners Mr Lin and Ms Ng, the Jay Peg colt had finished sixth when making his debut at Greyville a few weeks ago and was receiving weight from his seven rivals. Nonetheless, the Favour Stud bred colt drifted from 12-1 all the way out to jump a 30-1 shot, with few punters giving Woljayrine much of a chance.

Unbeaten Varallo (Var), was dispatched as favourite for the 2017 Godolphin Barb, with support also coming for Autumn In Seattle (Sail From Seattle) and Cape raider Sir Frenchie (Choisir).

Favourite Varallo did his chances no favour when jumping awkwardly, while Autumn In Seattle, Sir Frenchie and Argo Magic (Argonaut) all vied for the lead early on in the 1100m race.

Woljayrine, who raced just off the pace, was bought with a late run down the inside by jockey MJ Byleveld, with the pair getting up late to score by a length from Sir Frenchie, with the latter conceding the winner 4kgs and stamping himself a lively contender for the Gr1 Gold Medallion in the process. Varallo, who lost his undefeated record, was not disgraced back in third, with Gauteng raider Mujallad (Redoute’s Choice) filling the fourth berth.

Woljayrine, who won in a time of 61.64, was a R250 000 buy from the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

He is the seventh stakes winner for former Equus Champion and Gr1 Dubai Duty Free/Gr1 Singapore Cup winner Jay Peg and is out of the stakes placed Wolfhound mare Woelfin.
