IRISH-BREDS RULE BAHRAIN

Irish-bred horses dominated the His Royal Highness Prince Bin Salman Al Khalifa Cup, a local Group 1 run at Ar-Rifaaa in Bahrain on Saturday. Frankie Dettori rode the eventual winner, SHOGUN (IRE), to track the leaders and reacted well when the pace quickened entering the straight. Coming under pressure, he galloped home strongly to win by half a length, as Thorkhill Star (IRE) and Laidback Romeo (IRE) took second and third respectively.

SHOGUN (IRE) was bought privately out of the Aidan O’Brien stable, for whom he finished second in the Irish Derby Trial at Leopardstown, and now runs in the colours of Sheikh Abdulla bin Isa Al-Khalifa for trainer James Naylor. Bred by Whisperview Trading, he was sold by the Castlebridge Consignment to Blandford Bloodstock for €400,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale. The son of Fastnet Rock is a full-brother to Epsom Oaks heroine Qualify (IRE), out of Group 2 Park Hill Stakes second Perihelion (IRE). By Galileo (IRE), she comes from the family of Eva Luna, Brian Boru, Sea Moon and Workforce.
