IRISH-BRED TAKES WINTER DERBY

A dramatic renewal of the Group 3 Winter Derby Stakes took place on Saturday at Lingfield Park and it was the David Elsworth-trained gelding MASTER THE WORLD (IRE) that came up trumps. MASTER THE WORLD (IRE) was promoted to first place after a steward’s enquiry.

Bred by A Hanahoe he is the 29th individual Group winner for Coolmore Stud sire Mastercraftsman (IRE). who stands for €25,000. He is out of a daughter to the Listed winner and Group 1 performer Inishdalla (IRE). Champion three-year-old filly in Italy Costly Wave is from the extended family.

The Quinn and Benham-owned grey is a dual Goffs graduate, first selling as a foal to Timmy Hyde’s Camas Park Stud at the November Sale in 2011 for €38,000. The following year Camas Park Stud offered him at the Orby Sale where he sold to Gerard Butler for €32,000.

The supporting race on the card at Lingfield was the Listed Hever Sprint Stakes which was won by GRACIOUS JOHN (IRE). The five-year-old grey who was bred by Skeaghmore Hill was winning his 11th race and his second in this Grade.
