Top Jockey Breaks 12 Ribs in Fall

Kieran Shoemark suffered 12 broken ribs and a punctured lung in a fall at Lingfield on Saturday evening, trainer Roger Charlton revealed on Racing UK on Sunday.

Shoemark and fellow and jockey Dayverson de Barros were taken to hospital after an ugly incident in the five-furlong RBL Surrey County EBF Novice Stakes.

Cutthechat, the mount of 22-year-old Shoemark, fell after about a furlong after sustaining an injury and brought down Estupendo, ridden by de Barros.

The two horses suffered fatal injuries. Shoemark, 22, was taken to Brighton Hospital and Dayverson was taken to Redhill Hospital.

“I messaged him this morning and he replied himself that he had broken 12 ribs.

“It left me counting me ribs, I don’t know how many we have but it seems that is the majority, and he’s punctured a lung.

“His head is ok but he’s obviously in a lot of pain. I didn’t see it but I gather it was horrific to watch.

“You have to be thankful to God that it could have been a lot worse.”

Shoemark is attached to the Charlton yard and his 141 winners include a Royal Ascot winner for the yard last year. The rib cage if made up of 24 ribs, so he has broken half.

De Barros was having only his 14th ride and has yet to partner a winner. He escaped serious injury,.
