Baffert fires on Big Cap day at Santa Anita

Bob Baffert experienced a remarkable day on March 3 at Santa Anita, even by his high standards. His trainees Imagination and Wine Me Up finished first and second respectively in the San Felipe Stakes (G2), while Du Jour secured a rare grade 1 turf stakes victory for Baffert in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T). Additionally, Baffert's Newgate triumphed in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

This victory marked a significant return to form for 4-year-old Newgate, a horse that Baffert had opted to give extra time to mature. Baffert emphasized the importance of allowing horses like Newgate to develop properly, ultimately leading to their success in major races like the Big 'Cap.

Jockey Frankie Dettori, who had earlier ridden Imagination to victory, recognized the historical significance of the Big 'Cap, recalling past memorable races. As Newgate crossed the finish line, Dettori celebrated his win, performing his famous flying dismount to the delight of the crowd.

In the race itself, Newgate overcame a determined challenge from Subsanador, ultimately prevailing by a narrow margin. The victory was particularly satisfying for those involved, including Jack Wolf of Starlight Racing, who noted the excitement of the Big 'Cap and the impressive performance of Newgate.

Owned by a partnership that includes SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables, Newgate's win added another highlight to an already successful day for Bob Baffert and his team.
