Risque Comes From Behind in NZ 1000 Guineas

Top-ranked New Zealand jockey Matthew Cameron added the NZ$300,000 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (NZ-G1) to his record Nov. 14 when bringing Risque from far back for victory at Riccarton Park.

Last week Cameron won the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (NZ-G1) aboard Xtravagant.

Bursting through the pack, Risque pulled clear for a 1 1/4-length win from Strada Cavallo, with front-runner Dezzies Dream hanging on for a narrow third.

Serena Miss started as favorite but made no impression in the field of 13 fillies, all vying to pick up points in the 10-race New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year series and a rich bonus. The series culminates with the New Zealand Oaks (NZ-I) in March 2016,

Time for 1,600 meters (about one mile) was 1.35.96 on turf rated good.

"I had to come a bit wide and once I went for her and gave her a couple behind the saddle she really lengthened out and she was too good for them," Cameron said of the winning filly.

Risque, by Darci Brahma, is trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards and owned by Dick Karreman's The Oaks Stud.

"We won this race 10 years ago with Seachange and we've had a few placings since, so it's terrific, a big thrill for Dick and (resident sire) Darci Brahma," said Rick Williams, racing manager for The Oaks Stud.

Bred in New Zeland by D.P. Bentata, Risque is out of So Explicit, by Straight Strike, and added a first group win to her record after taking the listed Armadillo Stakes Oct. 24 at Riccarton in her stakes debut going the Guineas distance. She has a 3-2-0 record from six career starts.
