An Almond Eye On The World Cup

Dubai never fails to deliver and in so many ways too. HorseRacing being one of them and do they know how to put on a show!
The Dubai World Cup looms large on Saturday and the racing world stops in awe.

The apple of the eye in this year's event has to be the Japanese contender ALMOND EYE. All in the country, totals ten horses in the various races, Almond Eye, however has hogged the headlines for the past few weeks and she has been the talk of the town in Dubai.

As South African's covering the event, there is no better place to showcase our horses on the world stage than in Dubai. We have a strong history in the Carnival and on World Cup night, one of the most memorable being the saddle slip ride for Anton Marcus on Jay Peg and Herman Brown. Let us also not forget the Variety Club performance which catapulted him onto the World stage.

Heartwrenchingly, Lizard's Desire lost a close battle with Gloria De Campeo a few years ago when Kevin Shea was a whisker of immortality in the World richest race.

This year we have lesser goals as most of the horses from SA aren't up to mark sadly due to various issues. The Mike De Kock three haven't had the best preparations with Marinaresco having had the best of the three but now tries the Gold Cup 3200m distance in an unusually competitive year. The Vodacom July winner has a chance but a slim one. He does run on well though and will be looking for the ground.

Yulong Prince (Surcharge) and Majestic Mambo have had limited preparation time and are both optimistic entries with aims further afield in Hong Kong, the target in April.

In all, the racing is great, the atmosphere and vibe will be like any other World Cup, just superb. The only thing to do now is either be there or watch. It's a truly once in a lifetime day for the lucky few who get to win one of the races in racing's greatest show.
