AUS Prize money War has Chair Angry

Victoria Racing Club Chairman Amanda Elliott has expressed her frustration at the current prizemoney war between NSW and Victoria by lashing out at Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys.

In an interview on Tuesday morning on RSN927's Racing Pulse shortly before the official announcement of a prizemoney rise for the Melbourne Cup to $8 million, Elliott said such a war was counter-productive for the Australia racing industry.

"I'm getting to the stage where I am actually getting a little over the whole thing and a bit frustrated and a bit angry because we actually do have a responsibility to the sport of racing in Australia," she said.

"At the end of the day, the Australian racing industry is the one we care about.

"So, this kind of single-minded determination to knock off Victoria infuriates me to be honest and I think it's a silly little man making silly decisions."

Elliott said the sport of horse racing was suffering under the current climate.

"This glorious sport is in some way demeaned by this rather unnatural amount of prizemoney that is getting thrown at one or two races," she said.

"I know that people will say that is hypocrisy because you've just put the up the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup is the most important race in Australia. It is the most important staying race in the world and it's now worth $8 million and that's plenty."

Elliott said she was hopeful the prizemoney war would not linger long into the future.

"To me, it's just a bit of an anomaly that might run its course and the states will get back to dealing with each other in a respectful, dignified and collaborative way that they always have."
