Destinys Game can score

On 4 July Destinys Game overcame a slow start and then got to the front close to home, to beat Wordyness by a comfortable 1.25 lengths in a FM 67 Handicap over 1800m on the Classic track. As a result, Wordyness became all the rage to win Race 8 at the Vaal last Thursday over the same course and distance.

Unfortunately, she could not get into the frame and in a tight finish, only managed to finish sixth behind 100-1 roughie Burindi. In fairness, she was beaten just 1.25 lengths so it as not a disastrous result.

But the manner in which Destinys Game beat Wordyness gives one the impression she is good enough to put on a repeat performance. She carried 59kg to win that race and will only carry 1kg more this time.

She has improved markedly since trainer Paul Peter decided to pull the blinkers off her and has now won two of her last three races. Warren Kennedy is back in the saddle and one can expect another good run from this improving four-year-old daughter of Master Of My Fate.

There was a lot to like about the manner in which Tombola won her last race, beating Piccadilly Circus 2.50 lengths. That was only her second run since joining the Grant Maroun yard after having moved up from KwaZulu-Natal.

This daughter of Irish Flame looks to have a lot more room for improvement and could give Destinys Game a run for her money. Marco van Rensburg takes the ride.

Perfect Light is the unknown quantity in this race. This four-year-old daughter of Jam Alley has only run twice, finishing a neck second behind Dancewithadragon on debut and then looking dominant in winning her maiden over 2000m in her second start, beating Arabian Sunrise by one length.

She will carry only 52.5kg and that could make her a contender in this company. Only the race will tell us how good this filly might be. Karl Zechner takes the ride for trainer, owner and breeder St John Gray.

Gray also saddles Angelic Appeal who finished a 0.10-length second behind Burindi last Thursday. Muzi Yeni rode her in that event and he will be aboard once again. She is talented on her day and is a seven-time winner, but now as a seven-year-old mare, she is not always all that reliable.
