Star juvenile Pinatubo maintains perfect record with gritty Dewhurst win

Crack juvenile Pinatubo maintained his perfect record in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket but was made to work for his sixth successive win by runner-up Arizona.

A scintillating nine-length winner of the National Stakes last month, the 1-3 favourite was not as impressive visually this time but ultimately scored decisively by two lengths to keep his unbeaten record intact under William Buick.

Wichita, supplemented for the race by Aidan O'Brien, was back in third with Year Of The Tiger completing a Ballydoyle two-three-four.

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby said: "We can all try and be calm and composed. We saw with Enable last week what it meant and sometimes in this industry we don't realise what it means to the public and it's so nice to see everyone behind him.

"He's all heart. It's fantastic to be here and get the result."

The victory ensures that Pinatubo, rated higher than the legendary Frankel at the same stage of his career, will end the season as champion two-year-old colt and winter favourite for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

Paddy Power and Betfair left the son of Shamardal unchanged as 11-10 market leader for the first Classic of the year in Britain, with Arizona clipped to 16-1 (from 33) after a bold performance.
