Enable is European Horse of the Year

Enable has been crowned Cartier Horse of the Year for a second time, matching the feat of the legendary Frankel, who also picked up the prize twice.

Owned and bred, like Frankel, by Khalid Abdullah, Enable was also named 2019 Cartier Older Horse, bringing her total haul of Cartier titles to five during her career.

Pat Smullen was also recognised for his outstanding career in the saddle and his tireless fundraising efforts for cancer research, with donations having topped €2.5 million, by being presented with the 2019 Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit.

Enable, who is the third double winner of the Horse of the Year award alongside Frankel and Ouija Board, is set to stay in training next year as a six-year-old when she will be one of a number of leading lights for champion trainer John Gosden.

After a stellar 2019, Gosden dominated the 29th Cartier Awards at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday, with Too Darn Hot (Three-Year-Old Colt), Star Catcher (Three-Year-Old Filly) and Stradivarius (Stayer) successful alongside Enable.

Charlie Appleby and Godolphin were responsible for two of the three other award winners on Tuesday with Blue Point, a brilliant winner of the King’s Stand Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in the summer, named Sprinter of the year and the unbeaten Pinatubo named Two-Year-Old Colt of the year. Quadrilateral, trained by Roger Charlton for Abdullah, was crowned Two-Year-Old Filly of the year.

Harry Herbert, Cartier's racing consultant, said: "Bountiful talent combined with a courageous running style make her a joy to watch and it is no wonder that Enable is so popular with everyone in racing. It is exciting that Prince Khalid Abdullah is keeping her in training for 2020, when she could become the first three-time winner of the Cartier Horse Of The Year.

"Seven of the eight equine winners are the product of owner-breeders who form the backbone of our great sport and I extend my congratulations to Prince Khalid Abdullah, Sheikh Mohammed, Bjorn Nielsen, Anthony Oppenheimer and Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber.”

He added: "Pat Smullen, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit winner this year, is an inspirational figure. As well as his brilliance in the saddle, his dedication to help others who face the same health issues tells us what an outstanding human being he is.”

The Cartier Awards are decided through a combination of points earned by horses in Pattern races, the views of a panel of journalists and handicappers, plus the opinions of readers of the Racing Post, Daily Telegraph and ITV Racing viewers.
