Colourblind! Two non-greys gatecrash entries for Newmarket's Grey Horse Handicap

Two bay geldings amusingly featured among 17 entries for the Grey Horse Handicap at Newmarket this weekend despite both failing to meet the minimum race requirement of being a grey horse.

The Jonny Portman-trained Quick Breath and Glenamoy Lad, trained by Jennie Candlish, seemingly slipped through the net at the five-day entry stage for Saturday's race.

Sponsors Betway priced up Quick Breath and course-and-distance winner Glenamoy Lad at 6-1 and 25-1 respectively for the unique contest before getting wind of the pair's ineligibility.

Saturday's Grey Horse Handicap card

Chad Yeomans, PR manager at Betway, said: "We’re delighted to continue our superb relationship with Jockey Club racecourses this weekend as we sponsor at Newmarket on Saturday and Market Rasen on Sunday.

“While not the most valuable race on the card on Saturday, the most fascinating race is undoubtedly the Betway Grey Horse Handicap, which is always a spectacle. It seems there are a couple of horses who are very eager to run, as there are two bay horses who have managed to find themselves entered up!

"We’ve removed Quick Breath and Glenamoy Lad from our betting as they won’t be eligible to run. They’re both entered up elsewhere this week, so we’ll be watching out for them!”

Among the 15 runners allowed to take their chance on Saturday is Case Key, who may bid for a third victory in the race after scoring in 2017 and 2019 for Mick Appleby.

The seven-year-old is a 5-1 shot with Betway, with the race sponsors introducing the Martyn Meade-trained Clareyblue as a 9-2 favourite.

Meanwhile, Glenamoy Lad has another entry in a 6f handicap at Chepstow on Friday, while Quick Breath is entered in a 7f handicap at Chester.
