Coolmore is mourning the death of champion Atlantic Jewel.

The breeding giant announced her passing on Friday morning, after giving birth to a foal by US Triple Crown winner Justify.

Atlantic Jewel suffered a fatal hemorrhage. The colt foal survived.

Trained by Mark Kavanagh, the champion and multiple Group 1 winner saluted in 10 of her 11 career starts, amassing $1.5m in prizemoney.

Her biggest wins included the 2011 Thousand Guineas, the All Aged Stakes, the Memsie Stakes and the Caulfield Stakes.

Coolmore Australia’s Tom Moore told ANZ Bloodstock News: "Sadly we lost the brilliant Atlantic Jewel last night when she haemorrhaged after foaling.

"It is very sad news but she did leave behind a cracking Justify colt who is doing well."

The mare by Fastnet Rock was a $320,000 purchase by Coolmore at the 2010 Magic Millions Stales on the Gold Coast.

Following her career on track, Atlantic Jewel move to the breeding barn where her five coverings by multiple European champion Galileo have produced three offspring of racing age.

Included in those is stakes performer Pacific Ocean, and stablemate Russian Emperor who recently won at June’s Royal Ascot Carnival.
