Gai to Train Alligator Blood

Gai Waterhouse believes the surgery and subsequent recovery time for Alligator Blood will ultimately be of benefit to the reigning Queensland Horse of the Year, who is headed south to join her team at Tulloch Lodge.

It was announced on Sunday via social media that, following a dramatic split between his owners and trainer David Vandyke, the latter had informed majority owner Allan Endresz he no longer wished to train for him.

The flow on from that has proved a boon for the Waterhouse and co-trainer Adrian Bott.

"We're thrilled. We're thrilled to be training for the owners. We're thrilled to have that quality of horse," Waterhouse told on Wednesday morning.

"He's such an exciting horse, such a beautiful horse and we're hoping that we can even improve on what the previous trainer (David Vandyke) has done."

Fittingly, given the platform where fallout between Endresz and Vandyke was played out, Waterhouse announced the stable acquisition also via social media.

"Very grateful to @EndreszAllan and his family for sending us one of the country's best racehorses, ALLIGATOR BLOOD. Looking forward to him joining us at Tulloch Lodge and adding to his impressive CV," Waterhouse tweeted.

Scans on Alligator Blood recently revealed the reigning Australian Guineas winner was suffering from a condition called 'Kissing Spine', which requires surgery and an estimated four-to six-month recovery.

"I don't think it will be an issue at this stage," Waterhouse said.

"We can work around it; I've had years of experience doing things like that.

"It probably gives him time to mature even further."

Alligator Blood has won nine of his 15 starts, none of which came in his most recent preparation where the best result of his three runs was a second in The Silver Eagle at Randwick on October 10.
