Variety Club Mile (Grade 3)

WARRIOR has had his rating raised from 92 to 102 following his success in the Grade 3 Variety Club Mile for three-year-olds over 1600m on the Kenilworth summer course on Saturday 24 April. The Handicappers were of the opinion that consistent 5th placed HYDE PARK made for the most suitable line horse here, and accordingly his rating remains unchanged on 95.

The only other increase was for runner-up FIREALLEY, who goes from 92 to 97. In fact, in rating the race this way FIREALLEY runs to a mark of 101, but the Handicappers believed that he enjoyed the run of the race in a contest which was run slowly and that he is probably flattered by his proximity to the winner. This was also observed in the race time which was a full 3.8 seconds slower than the class average time and 0.81 slower than the Sweet Chestnut Stakes (Listed). As such, it was decided to adopt a cautious approach with FIREALLEY and he was effectively given half the ostensibly achieved ratings increase.

The only drop was for 4th placed CRIMSON KING, who is down from 103 to 100 to at least make him two pounds lower than the winner for the time being.

Sweet Chestnut Stakes (Listed)

REALLY ROYAL has had her rating raised from 86 to 100 after she won the Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that 6th placed VERONICA MARS had run her usual honest race and that she made for the best line horse, leaving her rating unchanged on 94.

Runner-up RAIN IN NEWMARKET had her rating increased from 95 to 99, while 3rd finisher LA QUINTA is up from 96 to 98. The only other increase was for 5th placed PINK TOURMALINE, who is up slightly from 94 to 95.

Four fillies were given a ratings drop. 4th placed MALEDIMO is down from 105 to 98 to make her the equal of the 3rd placed runner LA QUINTA for now. LEMON DELIGHT goes from 104 to 98 for much the same reason. TALLAHASSEE drops from 82 to 80, and lastly IN A HUFF is down from 81 to 77.
