VAAL CLASSIC THURSDAY 29 APRIL FORMGUIDES, SELECTIONS, PERMUTATIONS

Race 1: Preview: MOTOWN MAGIC (10) is by Uncle Mo out of a three-time winning Irish-bred mare by Alhaarth. TEAM GOLD (11) is by Twice Over out of a King Mambo mare and is half-sister to a Dynasty gelding who reached a rating of 85 in Cape Town. BRONCO BLITZ (4) looks the best of those to have run. (David Thiselton 10-11-4)

Race 2: Preview: EASTERN BELLE (3) has pace and scope for improvement so can go close if breaking better than she did on debut as she should have strengthened since that run in early February. ETERNITY RING (4) has pace and has been close up in both starts and the blinkers now come on and Khumalo is up. PROMISE OF HOPE (8) made a good debut over this trip when staying on after being backed and can improve. FLOREANA ISLAND (5) was just a head behind Promise Of Hope on debut when showing pace and followed up with a fair second over 1000m around the Turn at Turffontein Inside where she set the pace and was caught late. STOLEN KISS (11) has finished close up to all of Eternity Ring, Promise Of Hop and Floreana Island. SING GIRL SING (10) is by Philanthropist and is a full sister to Dingaans winner Singapore Sling who went on to Listed success in Hong Kong. LIKE A DIAMOND (7) by Captain Of All is a full sister to Listed Devon Air Stakes winner What You Are. (David Thiselton 3-4-8-5-11-10-7)

Race 3: Preview: SPANISH SONG (10) can go close here as she lost a lot of ground at the start on debut over this 1200m trip before running on to finish just 4,75 lengths behind the decent Hothchiwithchi and she is now well drawn with Luke Ferraris up after seeming to over-race over 1400m last time. DANCING ARABIAN (1) is capable of being involved here from pole position. Two-year-old LOLLAPALOOZA (11) is by Soft Falling Rain out of a Listed placed Fort Wood mare and she would not have to be great shakes to be placed on debut against older rivals. (David Thiselton 10-1-11)

Race 4: Preview: ELIUD (3) comes off a good second to the smart Puerto Manzano and is the one to beat. SHAH AKBAR (2) enjoyed hold up tactics in the SA Derby and this could see him going close here. INDY GO (5) has his third run after a rest and could go close over an ideal trip. (David Thiselton 3-2-5)

Race 5 Preview: AGAINST THE GRAIN (6) has some fine form this season from 1200m up to 1600m and is well drawn. KAYLA’S CHAMP (4) is 4kg under sufferance with the best weighted Action Packed but ran a good race over this trip last time and is drawn n pole. SPRING BREAK (3) enjoys this trip around the turn so has a shout. VISIWAY (1) can use her good pace to overcome a wide draw. ACTION PACKED (5) last ran in the Grade 3 Umkhomazi over 1200m at Greyville last August and if running close to that form she has a shout. (David Thiselton 6-4-3-1-5)

Race 6 Preview: EMERALD CREST (4) is on the up and the form of her last win has been franked so she can go in again off a three point higher mark although she has another tough draw to overcome. DUBAWI PRINCESS (5) has a good draw as opposed to last time when going close over course and distance. TOO PHAT TO FLY (1) has come to hand and is well drawn over a suitable trip. MAY QUEEN (2) got a tardy start last time and soon ran out of steam after going handy but is better than that and if it pans out better she has a shout despite a wide draw. RISE AS ONE (6) has a tough draw but has dropped to a competitive mark. DESERT PRIDE (3) is capable of better than her last two and is drawn in pole. (David Thiselton 4-5-1-2-6-3)

Race 7: Preview: RODGER THE DODGER (7) is in good form and is effective over this trip. MIDNIGHT GEM (3) is by Crusade out of Grade 3 winner over this trip Patchouli Moon so she could do well here although she has a tricky draw of seven and it is never easy against the boys. STOP FOR NOTHING (2) is widely drawn but is capable of a strong finish over this trip and is only one point higher than his last winning mark. FLOWER SEASON (8) could well enjoy the step down in trip having been consistent earlier in her career from 1450m to 1600m. INTO THE FUTURE (1) has the potential to do better than last time and faces an uninspiring field. (David Thiselton 7-3-2-8-1)

Race 8: Preview: BAYMAX (1), rated 81, lost by a head over 1800m to Pamushana’s Pride and the latter is now rated 116 after his good SA Derby run so over a 2000m trip he should stay and drawn in pole he could carry topweight to victory. AFRAAD (4) finished 0,30 lengths behind Pamushana’s Pride over this trip when rated 68 and after winning over 2400m last time can do well off a 72 rating. VALIDUS (2) ran a good race over this trip last time and has come down one more point and although drawn wide he is capable of staying on. (David Thiselton 1-4-2)

Race 9: Preview: MANTERIO’S (1) sire Oratorio won two Group 1s over this trip and he is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare who is a full sister to Grade 2 Good Circle Oaks (2400m) winner Front House so he should relish the step up in trip and has a fair draw. BLACK THORN (2) stayed on well last time over 1800m to beat Soldiers Song by 0,25 lengths and as the latter does not have an apprentice aboard this time he is in reality 4kg better off. SOLDIER’S SONG (5) has done well recently over 1800m but although his sire Silvano gives him a chance of improving over this trip his Casey Tibbs dam was out of a National Assembly mare and was a sprinter and the two winners she has produced, Shamrock Skipper (Captain Al) and Wild Irish (Toreador), are both sprinters so there is a slight doubt about the step up 2000m which he has tried once before and been unplaced. (David Thiselton 1-2-5)
