Murray to South Australia

South Australia will have a new jockey on its roster for the new season, with multiple Group 1-winning rider Callan Murray set to arrive from South Africa next month.

The seeds for Murray's move to Australia were sown when he spent time in Melbourne as an apprentice in the summer of 2016/17.

"Australia was the first international stint that I did when I went over to Melbourne and stayed with Matt Pumpa and rode for David Hayes," Murray said.

"I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a great experience for me, although it wasn't too long, and I could definitely see it as a place that I could call home at some stage in my life.

"I've done a lot of travelling and feel like it's time to find a place to settle in. I really enjoy the scene of Australia, I haven't been to South Australia yet, I'm really looking forward to setting up a base for myself."

The 24-year-old has completed two stints in Hong Kong as well as one in Singapore since that trip Down Under more than four years ago.

"It's obviously great to be on the world stage and with Hong Kong and Singapore and Australia being right up there, it's been fantastic riding with some of the best jockeys, some of the best trainers, and some really good horses, so I've really been fortunate, I've learnt a lot through my travels," Murray said.

"(I'm) definitely quite keen to use that experience that I've gained to have the most success I can in Australia."

Murray was crowned champion apprentice in the 2015/16 season in South Africa and counts his top-level wins in his homeland, and his victories in the Sha Tin Vase and Premier Plate in Hong Kong, among his career highlights to date.

"I think obviously any Group 1 winner has been a highlight, so fortunately I've had nine now," he said.

"My first highlight would probably be riding three Group 1 winners in a day, and definitely my Group 3 winners in Hong Kong, they were both really special."

Understandably, it hasn't been an easy process for Murray to organise his move to SA, given the current travel restrictions and the process involved in getting a visa, but he is grateful for the support he's received to make the move a reality.

"Fortunately, with the help of quite a few people, (like) Lachlan Weekley, he's assisted me, and Racing South Australia have sponsored me in getting over, so I'll be able to ride in South Australia, which I'm very grateful for and excited for," he said.

"Hopefully, I make a good impact when I get there."

Murray is due to fly out of South Africa at the beginning of August and will then complete his two weeks of hotel quarantine, before embarking on the next stage of his career.
