Via Africa's Boom Colt wins Grade 1 in Oz

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott won their first Golden Rose together as In The Congo led throughout in race-record time in toppling odds-on favourite Anamoe at Rosehill on Saturday.

Tim Clark drove In The Congo ($7.50) into the lead from barrier six in the $1 million three-year-old feature, established a blistering tempo and sustaining his gallop over 1400 metres, aided by a strong tail wind in the home straight.

Anamoe ($1.90 favourite) settled midfield under James McDonald and surged inside the final 200m but fell short by a long head, with In The Congo stopping the clock in 1:21.46. Coastwatch ($26) weaved through the pack for third, a further 1.5 lengths away.

Blue Diamond winner Artorius ($9.50) settled towards the rear of the field and was forced wide in the straight to make his challenge around the outside of the wayward Moridan ($91), finishing under two lengths from In The Congo.

"I had a conversation with Gai (Waterhouse) on the way here and I said to her I'll roll to the first turn and might just try and get a breather," Clark told SKY Thoroughbred Central.

"She said 'Don't you dare'. She said 'You keep him running and use his speed because it can win you the race', so I did that and we pulled it off.

"He is obviously thriving and all the team who look after him at Tulloch Lodge have done a wonderful job."

In The Congo has an enviable pedigree, by Snitzel out of three time G1-winning South African sprinter Via Africa. He was purchased for $350,000 from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale by the China Horse Club and Newgate Bloodstock.

Bott suggested In The Congo could be freshened for the $1.5m G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 30.

"We thought this was always a good form race going down to the Coolmore and it would be a good lead-up for that," Bott said.

"Mindful he has been up for a while and he's kicked a big goal now. We'll see how he comes through that now. It's a tough race today and expect him to bounce out well as he's that type of horse. We want to do the right thing by him."

Meanwhile, Anamoe remains favourite with Sportsbet for the $2m G1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), firming from $2.50 to $2.40 despite his Golden Rose loss.
