Melbourne vs Sydney for Sprint race best

Racing Victoria is set to review its spring sprint races, with the impact of The Everest on Melbourne's sprint Group 1s evident this carnival.

Both The Valley's G1 Manikato Stakes and Flemington's G1 Darley Sprint Classic suffered from the rich pop-up race in New South Wales, with fields down on quality from previous years.

RV chairman Brian Kruger said they would review those two races as they look to attract stronger fields in the future.

RV has previously gone head-to-head with NSW's pop-up races, and this spring announced a rich bonus to strengthen the G1 Empire Rose against rival The Invitation.

But the strength of the spring's two major sprint races remains a concern.

"We will certainly be looking at the impact of what NSW has been doing and see what we need to do differently," Kruger said on RSN927.

"I do think the two races you mentioned were the most impacted this year.

"We are obviously not happy with what's happened with the Manikato. This year's Darley, obviously Nature Strip was the standout, but previous renewals were pretty strong. This year we seemed to have more horses stay in Sydney.

"Whether that's COVID-related, and uncertainty around people being able to travel … the team will talk to the connections and work out what the issues were and see whether we need to be changing those things.

"The quality of the racing in our other races I thought was outstanding. We took some actions to deal with the new mares' race that was introduced in New South Wales.

"What we did there with the Empire Rose with the bonus, not only was the Empire Rose an outstanding quality race, but it had a positive impact on the lead-in mares' races as well."
