Caulfield To Build inner track

The Melbourne Racing Club has affirmed its commitment to begin building an inner racetrack at Caulfield after the Spring Carnival as part of its redevelopment plans.

The MRC and representatives from Racing Victoria held a final consultation session with industry participants on Wednesday regarding Caulfield's $30 million redevelopment, with the MRC's executive director of racing and operations Jake Norton describing the interaction as 'lively'.

"There was a good, constructive and lively discussion from various industry stakeholders and RV as well," Norton said.

"There is a lot of substance to our plans as far as expert analysis and evidence is concerned and there is often conflicting opinions about aspects of a topic like this from the same quarters.

"There are elements that people don't agree on and they are often misconceptions as well.

"It was good to get everyone in the room again to go through some of the past feedback and some development and analysis that had been made on those previous consultation sessions."

Norton said the club had engaged in wide consultation with industry participants over the $300m vision for Caulfield Racecourse.

The MRC said the new inner track will cater for increased racing during the day and night at the venue, with plans to race at Caulfield up to 45 times a year.

Caulfield will be closed for six months while the inner track is under construction.

Some participants were concerned at how tight the new inner track will be, despite the MRC's assurance that its measurements are similar in every regard to the established course.

Champion rider Damien Oliver had described the proposed inner track as being 'a dog track', while prominent trainers have echoed his concerns about how tight the new circuit could race.
