Daily News points to July winners but not necessarily the race winner

The Daily News 2000 is traditionally the third biggest day in the winter season calendar in Durban with the ruling July favourite also the favourite for this event.

The Daily News as it is still known is the traditional 3 year old lead up to the Durban July, the country’s foremost race held on the first Saturday of July at Greyville.

Just 200m short of that big event, this year sees See It Again trained by the legendary Michael Roberts and owned by the equally legendary business Nic Jonsson, take on the best of Cape Town and Johannesburg in a great renewal.

The Cape Derby winner took down the much vaunted recent KZN Guineas winner Charles Dickens but the latter reversed that form in the guineas. He's not in this event, the trainer citing that he doesn't stay, but Cousin Casey is and so are a host of Highveld runners including Son Of Raj (SA Derby) and Dave The King amongst others who are ready to take the crown.

The last horse to win the July after the Daily News was Legislate in 2014. However a few have come out of the Daily News to win the July. The most recent example being Kommetdieding who ran 3rd in the Daily News before his July win.

Before that Do It Again (2018) was only 4th in the Daily News before his July win.

Pomodoro was only 5th to Jackson in the 2012 edition before July victory.

Bold Silvano was second to Irish Flame in 2012 before his July win, turning the tables on his stablemate.

Interestingly Bold Silvano ran all of the Greyville 1900, Daily News, Champions Cup and Durban July in that order in 2010, a year when the Durban July was pushed back to the end of July due to the 2010 World Cup where no major event was allowed to take place in South African during the tournament. He won the 1900 as the only three year old in that event.

Big City Life won the 2009 Daily News and July. He is also one of two horses to do the treble in winning the Kzn Guineas since 2009. Legislate being the other. Legislate also won the Cape Derby.

This years event is a cracker and are we likely to see a horse come out of this event and claim the big prize in July?
