Lerena to Ride Star Colt - Sandringham Summit

Sandringham Summit has a new pilot, well, not totally new, as ace jock Gavin Lerena takes the mount in the Dingaans, having ridden the star colt on his debut effort.

Lerena is an old hand at guiding good horses through the divisions and his ability and race brain will allow Sandringham Summit a great ride home in what looks to be a penulty kick of a race at the ratings on Summer Cup Day.

Gavin Lerena revealed to SAHorseracing.COM that he was meant to ride the classy colt on his third start but was ill.

Calvin Habib rode the colt to two graded race successes at Greyville of late including the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes and was beaten by a short head last time out in the Graham Beck.

Lerena will bring his experience from decades of riding locally and overseas to the saddle of one of the nicest 3 year olds the country has seen in a long time.

Currently rated a 121, he was to be issued with a 123 rating had the race conditions of the Graham Beck Stakes not forbade it. It stated that no placed horse can be given more than 4 rating points. He ran to a 123 and looks the type who could end up in the 130's before the season is up.

Lerena takes the mount on Puerto Manzano from draw 16 in the big race, the Summer Cup, one race later and is looking to a fruitful day at the big T.

Currently riding to a 17.2 percent win rate he is in form and currently 3rd on the jockeys log with 48 winners. Richard Fourie leads with 86 winners to date and a win percentage of 20.62.
