Will The Real Sandringham Summit Show up?

The Grade 1 Juvenile winning superstar had been disappointing as a three year old to date but gets another chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the public when he takes on a strong Guineas field against some of the country's best in the division at Turffontein on Saturday.

Sandringham Summit has had a storied past for a horse so young. He announced himself when he weaved through his field from the back of the field like a the ultimate showman when winning the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe in Durban under Calvin Habib on July day. He then smashed Main Defender and others in the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes over the Mile at the same course to be rated one of the highest juveniles in recent times along with Lucky Lad. To put the cherry on the cake, he also won the Equus 2 year old Colt award in August 2023.

He hasn't won a race since and was beaten by Main Defender in a comeback run in the Graham Beck Stakes and by Purple Pitcher in the Dingaans at 4/10 after being bustled in the run before finished off strongly.

He was sold after to Varsfontein Stud for a multi Million Rand figure rumoured to be around the R7m mark but not after much interest from other parties.

In January 2024, he was given a 115 international rating by the International handicappers, the only 3 year old from South Africa to be rated in the top 200 in the world. He was also assessed much higher than expected in keeping with how South African horses are rated.

He lands upon the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas with much to prove. The start of the Triple Crown and the rest of the races in the series, Classic and the Derby, are his soft targets. The Derby will only be attempted if he has a legitimate shot at winning it all.

Purple Pitcher, his recent vanquisher, is his biggest treat for Robin Klaasen. Tony Peter hasn't placed Main Defender in the eye of the storm here but rather opting to place William Iron Arm in this race. He is 2 from 3 and second favourite.

It will be fascinating contest.
