American Trainer Gets TCO2 Ban

David Jacobson, a prominent owner and trainer in the Northeastern racing circuit, has been handed a 30-day suspension and a $2,500 fine for a TCO2 violation involving his horse, Got Thunder. The suspension begins on May 30, following a positive test result at Penn National over two months ago.

The Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) flagged the violation as part of its crackdown on "milkshaking," a method where horses are given sodium bicarbonate to combat muscle fatigue during races. This practice is prohibited under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) rules, which set a limit of 37 millimoles of TCO2 in a horse's blood.

Jacobson’s horse, Got Thunder, was disqualified from a $35,000 allowance race held on March 21, forfeiting $7,000 in prize money. Since the incident, Got Thunder, a 5-year-old gelding sired by Arrogate, has continued racing, placing sixth in a starter allowance at Aqueduct and second in an allowance optional claiming race at Monmouth Park. Jacobson has previously been a leading trainer in New York.
