Trevor Denman, the legendary race caller known for his long-standing association with Del Mar, will return to the microphone this summer for his 40th season at the coastal track.
The South African-born announcer has been the voice of Del Mar since 1984, with the exception of the 2020 COVID-19 season, which he spent with his wife Robin at their farm in Minnesota.
Denman's U.S. debut at Santa Anita in 1983 revolutionized race calling. Moving away from the traditional, monotonous style, the 71-year-old brought races to life, predicting moves and engaging listeners with his vivid descriptions.
His memorable catchphrases quickly became racetrack staples. “And Away They Go” replaced the usual “And they’re off,” and phrases like “They would need to sprout wings to catch…,” “Sooooo impressive…,” and “Moving like a winner…” became part of racing vernacular.
Denman's influence extended to film and TV, where he lent his voice to movies like “Let It Ride” and “Beverly Hills Cop I and II,” among others. He even appeared in a “The Simpsons” episode.
Beyond Del Mar, Denman has called races at various tracks across the U.S. and served as the voice of the Breeders’ Cup on ESPN.
Del Mar’s 85th summer meet begins on Saturday, July 20, featuring 31 days of racing and 39 stakes races with over $7.8 million in prize money, concluding on Sunday, September 8.
