The freshest horses win this race. That's a theory that's been going around for a while as most who enter this champion weight for age contest have come through a tough Durban July effort. That was the case again this year as the repeat of the winning result from the Gold Challenge played out again.
Under the guidance of renowned trainer Mike De Kock, Dave The King has matured impressively, securing his second consecutive Gr1 victory in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Champions Cup. De Kock’s strategic decision to geld the horse has paid off, allowing him to fully utilize his large frame.
Champion jockey elect Richard Fourie, winless until this point, expertly guided Dave The King into a smooth rhythm after what De Kock called “a bit of a messy start.” Taking on Purple Pitcher early in the race, Fourie maintained the lead comfortably to the finish line. De Kock noted, “When he gets to the front, it will take a good horse to beat him.”
Cousin Casey, despite a strong effort, had to settle for his fourth consecutive second-place finish. Meanwhile, See It Again and Purple Pitcher finished in a dead heat for third.
