QUID PRO QUO SHINES AT THE KZN RACING AWARDS

Quid Pro Quo was the star of the evening at the 2024 KZN Racing Awards held at Hollywoodbets Greyville Race Course on Friday, August 30th. The filly was crowned Champion Horse of the Season after an unforgettable campaign, which included historic wins in the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship (1200m), the Golden Slipper (1400m), and the Douglas Whyte Stakes (1600m). She became the first juvenile filly to achieve victories in all three of these prestigious races, forming an "unofficial" Triple Crown.

Bred and owned by Gerald Kalil, Quid Pro Quo displayed her dominance throughout Champions Season, winning five consecutive races across various distances. Her versatility suggests that she may have a promising future beyond her two-year-old season. Trainer Barend Botes and jockey S’Manga Khumalo joined Kalil on stage to celebrate this historic achievement, marking the first time a juvenile has earned this coveted award.

In a show of dedication, Richard Fourie made the trip from Gqeberha to Durban after completing a full card at Fairview, to personally accept the award for Champion Jockey in KwaZulu-Natal. Fourie’s 126 wins in the province, with a strike rate of 24.5%, were a major contribution to his national record of 378 winners in a single year.

Gareth Van Zyl narrowly edged out Alyson Wright to claim the KZN Champion Trainer title, finishing the season with 54 wins to Wright's 53. The Hollywood Syndicate dominated the KZN Champion Owners category.

Rachel Venniker was celebrated as KZN Racing’s Personality of the Year, while Kumaran Naidoo received the Anita Akal Special Award, recognizing his resilience and unwavering passion for racing, even in the face of personal adversity.
